An electro permanent magnet contains two kinds of magnetic materials, using electricity to actviate or deactivate its own magnet field. It combines the properties of a permanent magnet and the ease of control of an electromagnet.
Both industrial magnets are electrically switched on/off. The main difference lies in 2 points.
First, electromagnet works on consistent electric power; if cutting off the power supply suddenly, it losses magnetic force. What distinguishes electro-permanent magnet from electromagnet is that the former does not use electricity during working. If cutting off the power, it can remain holding/lifting/gripping/clamping of the load.
Second, due to continuous power input, electromagnet has heat generation which might affect its workholding effectiveness during machining. Whereas that is no problem to EPM.
For an electro permanent magnet, the magnetic force still remains in the event of a power failure, which is to say, in lifting or workholding applications, the ferrous load or workpiece, will stay lifted/clamped, no need to worry about the falling off.
Moreover, the magnet cannot be deactivated until the electrical power is restored.

There is almost no residual magnetism in low carbon steel, but a little bit in high carbon steel. If there is a requirement for residual magnetism, we can design the product to be demagnetized with demagnetization treatment.
